Project 1 - Photograms

Photogram project!

Exposure: 8 | Time: 6 Seconds
I created this image by placing sand directly on top of the piece of photo paper in a short and wide pile. I then carefully moved the sand away to form the empty "X" in the middle. This image reminds me of graffiti because the rough edges and spatter effects. This image symbolizes rebellion to me because of the graffiti look and the large X.

This image was made by cutting out a skull shape in paper, then tearing up a bunch of small pieces of paper and piling them up around the edges. I like the way the pieces of paper overlap each other and create different levels of grays all over. This piece gives me the feeling that the skull was from someone who died in the woods and was forgotten, and the small pieces of paper around the skull are like dead leaves.

This one was made by cutting up a bunch of pieces of paper and layering them on top of each other on the sides. I also folded a piece of paper together and made cuts so there are mirrored parts on each side. When I made this photogram it was initially not centered for the first second that I turned the enlarger on. I shut off the enlarger and re-centered the picture, and did another 2 seconds. I think this is what caused the image to look blurry on the center piece of paper, but very sharp on the edge pieces. I really liked the contrast of the blurry center but very sharp edges. This one is kind of vague to me, I'm not sure what it symbolizes. My favorite part is the layered pieces of paper in the top left.

This photogram was made by completely covering a piece of paper with sand, then creating a swirl effect by dragging my finger around in the sand. This one was very challenging to make, and I had to try about 5 times to get the design to come out the way I wanted. I am really happy with the way the grains of sand appear along the edges of the swirls, creating a cool faded effect. This photogram was meant to look like a galaxy, but it also looks like an eye to me. This symbolizes that the world is always watching.

This piece is meant to be the opposite of the previous one. Rather than placing a large pile and drawing a path through it I placed sand on the edges and made a swirl with the sand in the center. In hindsight I think this one would have looked better with a lower exposure time because the edges are a bit rough and blurry. I think this one is a nice contrast to the black swirl, and the two together have a bit of a yin-yang effect.

Are the tips on page six about "Starting your obsession with light" enough to make someone knowledgeable about lighting? Which of the five categories in DICCH is the most important for creating a quality image? Why are shadows important in an image? I was very intrigued by the part about diffused light. I did not know that the reason shadows are more blurry in cloudy weather is because the clouds are diffusing the sun's light.  I did not realize that lowering the intensity of a light can have so much impact on details and shadows. The comparison on page 14 does a great job of showing how much more detail is preserved with a lower light.  The most interesting part about this reading for me was the information about color gamuts. The camera has the largest gamut, compared to monitors and printing so our final images sometimes end up disappointing because they don't look as good on a screen as they did originally. Project 4: Digital Submission

For this project I decided to do a combination of solairzed portraits and painting with light. I asked a bunch of my friends to use a lighter to draw a word that was important to them. I then took a 10 second long exposure in a dark room and they drew the words. I had four other people paint their words with light, but I thought these three were the strongest for my concept. My "models" had to draw their words a few times because I accidentally ruined my first two roles of film, but they really nailed it on the last try! It may be tough to see in blog format, but the portraits gradually move from extremely solarized to only minimal solarization. The portraits above the words show the person who drew the word. Being able to see the person who wrote the word lets the viewer think about what the person is feeling, rather than simply seeing the word on its own. Reading Response: Disclosure and Uncertainty in Early Photography

The "Disclosure and Uncertainty in Early Photography" reading was very interesting to me because I had very little knowledge about the early history of photography. It was cool to learn that while photography may have started from a simple goal of reproducing nature quickly and accurately, it didn't take long for artists to develop their own styles and themes for their work. In some of the pictures shown in the reading, its clear that artists like Talbot and Le Gray were not simply trying to reproduce nature onto a sheet of paper. They were expressing themselves by showing the parts of the world that felt interesting to them, and creating some really stunning images (especially considering that their work was done in the mid 1800s). I found the story about Le Gray's  Mediterranean Sea, Sète  extremely interesting.
