For this project I set out to create two images which contrasted with each other but also were connected through a theme. I first looked for areas where the lighting was interesting, and I stumbled on this can of beer which was reflecting a lot of light from the sun. I noticed that it paired well with the photo of the sticker so I put them together. I think these two images contrast a lot visually. The first image has a complex background with warm colors, and the second image's background has cool colors and isn't very complicated. In the center of the image this is reversed. The first image has a cool subject while the second image has a bright red in the center. I did some minor editing to bring out the warm colors in the first photo, and the cool colors in the second one.  These images together make a point about our democracy. Sandwiched Negatives Photo This photo used sandwiched negatives of the Meliora letters from mel weekend and a photo of the soccer field. I think the extreme darkness in the middle combined with the faint white at the top feels pretty creepy. The person acting sad sitting in the "O" also adds to this effect.   Solarized Photo I used solarization to make this photo. I like the effect that this creates a lot more than I thought I would so I think I will use this technique in project 4.  Some parts of the photo did not get solarized very much, but along the left side and the top it is solarized a lot. I think the camera in the top right looks really nice as well.

I think the main type of images I would like to take for this project are long exposures and painting with light. I think painting with light will be a lot of fun. The other two effects don't seem as interesting to me, so I will work mostly with the two I mentioned. I'm pretty bad at coming up with concepts for these types of projects before I can see what I am able to do on my own with the techniques. But I think my concept will revolve around the photos having a lot of darkness with small yet interesting bits of light. The parts that show light could symbolize hope or beauty in a dark and mysterious world. I really liked the long exposures of the ocean that I saw online, so I am planning to take a few of those when I go back home (which is right near the ocean). I think the way that the ocean winds up looking really flat and metallic looks really cool, and I want to replicate this. (Un)Natural While I was growing up in New Hampshire I spent a lot of time outdoors. My dad would regularly take me and my brother on small hikes for fun. I even spent a large amount of my time in high school as part of an outdoor adventure group. Since I've come to Rochester I've felt like I was missing parts of what made me like being home so much. So I decided I'd take some time to observe the small bits of nature that are always around us, and take some photos too! For this project I set out to capture images that show the intersection between nature and man-made aspects of our world. I wanted to capture the beauty of nature in areas that it was also shaped by unnatural fixtures nearby.  I never really notice the amount of beautiful plant life that is all over our campus, and the way it improves the campus's appearance. Dave Hill This photo by Dave Hill does a great job of utilizing light to tell a story. The subject is in a dark, messy room with dirty shoes on the bed. The subject is looking out the window, perhaps suggesting that she wants to be out of this room. I think the lighting makes this message even clearer. The only light in the room appears to be coming from the window, which makes the photo fairly light in areas that are close to this window. Conversely, the other areas which are away from the window are very dark. This makes the room look even worse, but highlights the window a lot. Highlighting the window makes the world outside the room seem very appealing, which gives me the feeling that the subject wants to get out.  This photo (also by Dave Hill) uses a fire as the main light source other than the small amount of light provided by being outside at night. Are the tips on page six about "Starting your obsession with light" enough to make someone knowledgeable about lighting? Which of the five categories in DICCH is the most important for creating a quality image? Why are shadows important in an image? I was very intrigued by the part about diffused light. I did not know that the reason shadows are more blurry in cloudy weather is because the clouds are diffusing the sun's light.  I did not realize that lowering the intensity of a light can have so much impact on details and shadows. The comparison on page 14 does a great job of showing how much more detail is preserved with a lower light.  The most interesting part about this reading for me was the information about color gamuts. The camera has the largest gamut, compared to monitors and printing so our final images sometimes end up disappointing because they don't look as good on a screen as they did originally.
